Walk-in shower or bath? A guide for your new bathroom
The choices that shape every bathroom renovation: shower or bath, wall-hung or floor-standing toilet, and which finish level — with the price consequences included.
The first choice is the biggest: bath, shower or both. A walk-in shower (€ 1,500 to € 5,000) is the most popular intervention of the moment — it looks spacious, is safe to step into and easy to keep clean. A bathtub is wonderful for those who genuinely use it and remains popular with families with young children; if the bath mainly serves as a storage shelf, a walk-in shower wins back precious square metres.
Think ahead with that choice too: a threshold-free walk-in shower with anti-slip tiles and perhaps a grab rail or seat makes the bathroom age-proof — you live independently with it for longer. The second choice is the toilet: wall-hung or floor-standing. A wall-hung toilet with concealed cistern is the standard upgrade — sleek, easy to mop under, with the flushing technology neatly hidden. For a separate toilet room, a complete toilet renovation (€ 1,250 to € 4,500) is often done in a few days and combines well with the bathroom job.
The third choice is the finish level, and it weighs heaviest on the final price: between basic fixtures and luxury custom work sits easily a factor of 2 to 3. Within a complete renovation of € 5,000 to € 25,000, that is the difference between solid white fixtures with standard tiles and a custom cabinet with natural stone. Set your budget before the showroom, request several quotes and set them against the price index — then you choose with sense and with pleasure.
